Many of you ask me what the beaches are like on the North Shore....
are they windy? does it rain a lot? are there any sandy beaches?
From these questions I gather that you've received information that the beaches on the North Shore are somewhat inferior to the ones that have been marketed on the South and West sides of Maui.

I'll attempt to answer from my personnal knowledge, having lived on the North Shore, in Haiku, for 30 years now.

The North Shore beaches are my personnal favorites, along with Makena's Big Beach and Little Beach on the South Shore, and Red Sands Beach in Hana!
I love to walk on the beach early in the morning before the hot sun and the crowds (and there are far less crowds at any time than the South and West Shores).
I start at Paia Bay and walk all the way down to Spreckesville and back. (A good 2 to 2 . 5 hours, including time in the water). There are such a variety of beaches along the way, and ever-changing conditions. Each morning I have to pick anew my swimming, or body-surfing, or soaking, or wading, etc., etc., spots.
One of my most loved aspects of the beach is that it CONSTANTLY changes.... so when you ask me "Are there big waves?" the answer is "Yes, sometimes".
Or if you ask "Is it safe for children?" the answer is "Yes, sometimes".
"Is it windy?".... Yes, sometimes.
"Is it hot? / cold?".... "Yes, sometimes".

At her best, Maui inspires a person to let go of expectactions.... and the more that you're able to do so, and welcome what she has to offer, the more of her special Magic you'll discover.

I am a travel agent offering accommodations.  But I can't stop there.
Maui has blessed and inspired me for half of my life now, and it saddens me to see visitors just get the "fluff".  Maui is SO much more than white sandy beaches and hula girls in coconut bras at "luaus".

Come with an open mind
Bring your children and let their little feet walk on the sand and be tickled by grass.... Let a playful wave touch their joyful spirits.
Open to YOUR unique-in-all-the-world-never-before-and-never-again vacation.
Enjoy Maui's beaches, mountains, waterfalls, bamboo forests, people, and all the rest.

If you're lucky, some of your experiences may surprize you....

Nameless Beach
Springtime at Baldwin Beach - Maui, Hawaii Surrounding the small, eclectic town of Paia, and just 10 - 15 minutes drive from Haiku, are numerous beautiful North Shore Beaches.

Baldwin Beach, Ho'okipa Beach, and to a lesser extent Paia Bay, are the most well-known, but there are several small, nameless little coves and bays that are well worth checking out.

These are a few photos of some of them.... most taken on my early morning walks.... in my opinion, the best time to be at the beach anywhere  ; )

Early morning is a good time to catch the local people in their daily activities....
fishing is a big one.

Sometimes they are also out
picking opihi (limpet) off the rocks,
and gathering limu (seaweed)
